Why Do the Majority of Naruto Fans Hate Sasuke?
Time and time again, while I surf the web, I come across forums, message boards, groups, etc. that continuously express their hate for Sasuke. I know lately in the series he’s been a jerk, but that’s no reason to diss the life out of him. And now, I want to ask every Naruto fan, “Why does everyone hate him so much?”.
I mean, yeah he’s an arrogant, egotistical, cold, self-centered bastard whose entire life is centered on seeking revenge, but who cares? It’s not like he chose to be that messed up, he just is. Yes, he is just an anime character, but have you ever thought of it this way? His brother, HIS BROTHER FOR GOODNESS SAKE, killed his entire family when he was like what? 7 maybe 8-years-old? Hell, if that would’ve happened to me I would’ve gone completely berserk.
His life has been full of loneliness, misery and betrayal, so what do you expect out of him? A happy, giddy little boy who likes rainbows and puppies? Hell no. And to top off this undesirable lifestyle of his, nearly every female shinobi between the ages of 8 and 16 are infatuated with him! I think he has complete permission to go crazy, you know you would (unless you’re some type of sick lecher >.<).
Ok, now you’re thinking, “Well, Naruto’s been lonely and miserable his whole life, but he’s not cold.” But there’s a big difference in these two character’s situations. Naruto has been alone his whole life, born with nothing and raised with nothing. While on the other hand Sasuke had everything to lose, which is what happened. Imagine, being a little kid and walking into your house to see your parents slaughtered bodies, only to find out that the culprit of this heinous crime was your own flesh and blood, your big brother. Personally, that is completely traumatizing, even to the life of a shinobi.
At times like that I without a doubt would have betrayed my friends to seek revenge. That’s just the way the world works, and how the human mind thinks. I often say, “You can diss me, you can diss my friends, but diss family and you’re dead.” I see what Sasuke is doing is sort of “defending his family”. He has to avenge the ones he cared for most. After all, friends are replaceable, family isn’t. A bit harsh, but completely true.
Also, to those people who claim to hate Sasuke, but love Itachi, you guys are a bunch of fucking hypocrites. Itachi is a much more horrible person than Sasuke ever was or ever will be, and if you hate the younger Uchiha because of his betrayal... Excuse me? But have you even looked at Itachi’s biography? First off, he betrays Konoha and becomes a missing-nin. Secondly, he just goes insane and massacres his entire family/clan for reasons still unknown. And lastly, he’s still off seeking power despite the fact he’s already one of the most feared and strongest shinobi at the age of 17. I mean seriously, even Orochimaru fears him!
Over the many Naruto sites I have visited these are some of the main reasons why Sasuke is hated by so many. Well, let’s just say I have my own opinions on these reasons.:
1 - All the girls want him -
Heh, I laugh my ass off every time someone says they hate him because of that. You think he wants the attention? Obviously not. You all know for a fact that having the girls act that way annoys him. It’s not his fault, you make it seem like Sasuke says, “Hey girls, look! I’m so pretty, come and love me!” Hah! Can you even imagine him saying that? I can’t. And for those of you who jump straight to the conclusion of Sasuke being gay (even though I don’t mind it ^_~) because he won’t go out with any of the girls, please remember; HE’S ONLY 12 YEARS-OLD PEOPLE! And one last thing, you do realize that you’re jealous of an anime character, right?
2 - He supposedly does no work to gain power -
Hah! My ass! Ok yeah, he’s got an advanced bloodline and of course that adds to his genius, but he’s not just a shinobi genius you know. Like Naruto says, “There are no short-cuts in life.” So it’s almost a fact that he wasn’t just handed over his power. What do you think he’s been doing his whole life, huh?! Sitting on his bed, watching anime and pigging out on junk food?! HELL NO! (‘Cause that’s what I do ^_^;;) He’s been off training so he can kick Itachi’s ass one day, duh! I mean, revenge on Itachi’s the only reason Sasuke refuses to die. And if you still disagree with me, having an advance bloodline isn’t everything, for example look at Hinata (and please don’t get me started on the fact it’s different because she’s a girl).
3 - He doesn’t acknowledge/respect his teammates because he’s an arrogant, egotistical, asshole -
Ok, this is a controversy, but I don’t see how really. If you ask me, he actually acknowledges everyone, but he just has a different way of showing it. You know he acknowledges Naruto, because he wants to fight against him, and we all know Sasuke wouldn’t want to ever face a weakling. But Sakura, I personally think doesn’t deserve that much praise from him because of her reactions.
As we all know, Sakura strives to impress Sasuke and that’s why she has always done her best in her studies, and until he compliments her, she will always work harder. But despite this form of “encouragement” we’ll call it, she’s still weak. As far as I remember, he’s really only acknowledged her ability once ( When they were heading to the Chuunin exam, and Sasuke and Sakura noticed the genjutsu being performed by Kotetsu and Izumo to fool the Genins), and until her abilities improve, to me, that’s enough praise.
Lastly, Sasuke does respect Kakashi and we know that. I really think that Sasuke has a good sense of who to acknowledge and who not to. Since he’s striving to beat his brother one day, he has to be selective in who he chooses to respect, since they usually become some sort of role model to you.
4 - He willingly betrayed Konoha and went with the Sound ninjas -
Ok, this is actually a valid reason to not like Sasuke. I finally got to catching up in the Manga: Yes, it was horrible; Yes, Sasuke was being stupid; and yes, I am too a bit upset....BUT NOT TO THE POINT TO HATE HIM!
He does have his reasons to go running to Orochimaru. I mean look at how his battle with Itachi went. (>_< I don’t want to think about it) He was beat so fast, he practically didn’t even have time to think. Can you just imagine going through the Mange Sharingan with the image that Itachi put into Sasuke’s mind? Watching your parents repeatedly get murdered before your eyes for what seemed like a whole day... I swear I almost cried when I read that part. Itachi fought his brother with no mercy, and then just to make him snap, Itachi tells him “What have you been doing all this time? You’re still weak...”
MY GOD PEOPLE! IS SASUKE’S LIFE NOT ANGSTY ENOUGH FOR YOU?! (I’m so close to convulsing out of anger it’s not even funny) I really think I would’ve already killed myself if my life were that messed up. To me, everything that he goes through sends me through a pity trip. Of course, I do wish with all my being that he would’ve listened to Kakashi’s advice about giving up on revenge, but being the character that he is, we all knew he wasn’t going to. Right now, all he hungers for is power and being a devoted fan, all I can do is hope that he gets rescued before he can do anymore damage.
In reality this is kind of like a Final Fantasy 7 scenario; Sephiroth (Sasuke) looks like the bad guy the whole time, but his actions and the actual epitome of all the “evil-doings” is Jenova (Itachi). If it weren’t for Itachi, the Uchihas would still be alive, Sasuke would most likely be a genki character instead of an angsty one, and none of this “seeking revenge” crap would be happening. So basically..... WE’D HAVE A FREAKING BORING SERIES WITH NO REALLY GOOD PLOT TWISTS! I personally think that the whole “Sasuke turning evil” thing is making the series really good, and I can’t wait every week for the new chapter.
So you see, Sasuke isn’t particularly meaning to be so hateable, he’s just living with a one-track mind. At the end of that track is one thing: Him killing Itachi and the revival of the Uchiha clan. He has no room for friends or distractions, all he wants is to get stronger (which I may add is Naruto’s goal as well.), and let’s face it people, the series wouldn’t be complete without him. He is the main antagonist after all, and if a story only had protagonists, we’d be in for one dull ride.
It’s quite amazing that I could write all this in defense of a fictional person, but I really am a passionate fan of Sasuke. And I just want you all to know, I will laugh so hard in all of your faces when Kishimoto-sama makes Sasuke do something good that will surprise everyone (even me perhaps), and make you all come crawling back to his fandom.

Personally, I think he's a badass. No question about that. I never really noticed how cool his new suit was until I saw it in the anime (I can only interpret so much from the manga, granted I've read it in english).
This is my theory of where I see people start hating Sasuke in the story. *SPOILER ALERT for those who haven't read the manga*
Sasuke always thinks of himself as superior to Naruto, but whenever Naruto becomes stronger, he feels threatened (i.e. Wave Country Saga). During the fight with Gaara, he was not able to defeat him and he witnessed Naruto possess an immense power that eventually stopped Gaara from getting out of hand. I mean, when you see your buddy do a Kage Bunshin x 10000 and summon a gigantic toad, you might feel a little jealous. After that, Sasuke found out that Itachi was more concerned about Naruto than himself due to the fact that Naruto contained Kyuubi. Again, more jealousy. Another incident after that involved a showdown at the rooftop of the Konoha hospital between Naruto and Sasuke with their respective super moves, the Rasengan and the Chidori. Both ended up using them on water tanks thanks to Kakashi's intervention. Sasuke again became jealous when he saw that his damage to the tank was incomparable to Naruto's (think puny hole to humongous blast area). So he thus leads himself to the Sound and Oro (watch out for that tongue) to basically gain a shortcut to power through the curse seal, become stronger than Naruto, and gain Itachi's recognition (biggest reason).
So with all the facts out of the way... all this jealousy brought forth bitchiness (sad as it may seem) thanks to the search for more power, kinda like how Vegeta accepted Babidi's evil spell... (I love the the DBZ parallels). Thus since this basically turned Sasuke from "badass" to "whiney," a lot of people began to dislike his character.
Oh well, what can you do with character development? Hope that helps, and jeez, I wrote a lot.
